The flywheel helps to start the engine with the teeth around the starter ring on the flywheel. This counterweight is built right into the flywheel, which is why it’s so crucial that you get a vehicle-specific flywheel for your vehicle. The flywheel servers this function.įrom there, it provides a natural counterweight to the crankshaft. It’s why the flywheel has to be significantly heavier than a flex plate – because while an automatic engine has a torque converter, a manual one does not. The first function of a flywheel is to keep the engine in motion even when you stop accelerating. It connects to transfer power from the engine to the transmission (along with the clutch). It provides rotational inertia to keep the engine in motion. The flywheel serves four main functions for your vehicle. If the problem is bad enough, you might end up needing a new transmission too! Flywheel Function If you’re having trouble shifting gears, it means your flywheel is extremely warped, and you’ve probably had some problems you’ve been ignoring for a while.įurthermore, it’s doubtful that your only problem will be the flywheel if you’re struggling to shift gears. While it’s unlikely that a broken flywheel would be the cause, it’s not impossible either. If you smell a burning clutch, you either need to reevaluate how you drive or replace the clutch or flywheel. While the most common cause of a burning clutch is improper use, if you’re doing everything right, then it’s a sign of a deeper mechanical problem. Even worse, it will lead to damage on your start if you leave it unaddressed for too long. With broken teeth, it’s an intermittent problem that will worsen the longer it takes you to repair it. If the teeth are the problem, once you try again, it should start. Over time these teeth can break, and when the starter tries to engage with these broken teeth, you’ll hear a grinding noise. These teeth make up the starting ring, and it’s what your starter connects to turn over the engine. Inconsistent StartingĪll around the flywheel, there are teeth. The longer you let the problem go on, the more likely it is that you’ll need to replace both the flywheel and the clutch! 4. Gear slippage happens when you shift to a higher gear and the engine RPMs increase, but the wheels’ speed stays the same. Gear slippage can happen if the surface where your clutch is attached is very worn or has a bad surface. While it’s not the most common cause, it’s definitely something you need to look into. However, another potential cause is a warped flywheel. Clutch Chatter (Vibrations)Ĭlutch chatter can come from various problems, including worn clutch discs, pressure plates, or release bearings. This will only happen if you have a double mass flywheel on your car model. If you have a double-mass flywheel, which many modern cars have, you will probably hear a lot of noise from the transmission when your engine is idling. Here is a more detailed list of the signs of a bad or failing flywheel to look for: 1. While these are not all the possible signs, they are the most common ones. You may also notice other shifting issues. You may also feel vibrations, feel gear slippage, or notice a burning smell coming from the transmission. The most common symptom of a bad flywheel is bad noises from the transmission case at idle. It wont help with gear rattle however.Flywheel Replacement Cost Symptoms Of A Bad Flywheel It just makes the break-in time so much shorter. I also had my billet crankshaft spin balanced as well but assuming the tolerances from the factory are good - as a minimum I would advise spin balancing for all flywheel installs. Would I like to go with a 50% lighter flywheel? Sure, but drivability suffers going that light on the road. In fact break-in was over and done after 2 tanks full of gas. I have no gear rattle and no flywheel chatter and shudder. When I rebuilt my motor I had my new Spec billet flywheel spin balanced and then I went with a Fluidampr harmonic balancer. Research pointed me to the heavier of the two.Īfter the install my Spec 16lb billet flywheel had 2 new characteristics:ġ) Gear rattle only with the AC on at a stop.Ģ) Flywheel chatter + shudder when engaging the clutch from a stop.Īfter about 8k miles the flywheel chatter and shudder smoothed out. I had the option to go with a 12lbs aluminium or 16lbs billet steel Spec flywheel. I will share my experience with my Spec Stage 3+ LWSMFW. The OEM flywheel weighs in at about 24.5 lbs if I remember correctly.
